USA Pro Cycling Challenge Snowmass AspenVisit Site


The 2013 USA Pro Challenge gives visitors to Snowmass the opportunity to see the best cyclists in the world in action. The 2013 race begins in Aspen/Snowmass on August 19 and travels around the area until the final rider crosses the finish line on August 25.

The courses are impressively grueling, and riders are going to be in for the challenge of a lifetime.

Stage 2 of the 2013 USA Pro Challenge begins on Tuesday, August 20 at 10:10 A.M. at Main and Garmisch in Aspen. Even though they’re the best in the world, the cyclists will be in for a brutal challenge: they’ll climb 12,000 feet up Independence Pass, then on through Buena Vista, Fairplay, Alma, and Hoosier Pass. Then they’ll grind up the 15% incline of Moonstone Road through Breckenridge and down Boreas Pass to the finish line.Stage 1 of the 2013 USA Pro Challenge begins on Monday, August 19 with the Aspen/Snowmass Circuit. While the distance doesn’t present much of a challenge for these expert cyclists, the elevation gain may send some riders packing. The course consists of three 22-mile laps (for a grand total of 66 miles) between Aspen and Snowmass, with 3,080 feet of climbing per lap. The race begins on Main Street in Aspen at 1:05 P.M. and crosses the Maroon Creek Bridge before riders pedal up to Snowmass Village.

Both Stage 1 and Stage 2 of the 2013 USA Pro Challenge provide plenty by way of entertainment in Aspen / Snowmass, but there will be much more to do than simply standing and cheering on the sidelines.

If you’re a passionate cyclist just a few pedals short of making the Pro Challenge cut, there’s still a lot for you to enjoy on two wheels. On Sunday, August 18 the Aspen Sprint Challenge will give teams and individual riders the chance to participate in a sprint challenge, with $10,000 up for grabs. Even if you don’t win, you can still enjoy the free cocktail reception at the Dancing Bear after the race.

For cycling enthusiasts without a competitive streak, the moonlight cruise ride on Sunday, August 18 lets riders tour Aspen the right way: with a slow, relaxing spin through town. Riders meet at the Limelight Hotel between 7:30 and 8:30 P.M. and follow the route through the Historic West End and Downtown Aspen and through to the John Denver Sanctuary along the Rio Grande Trail before riding back to Aspen. Don’t forget to load up for your ride with $10 pizzas and $4 Shock Top Beer on special for moonlight cruise riders.

The Finish Line Festival for the USA Pro Challenge in Aspen/Snowmass takes place from August 18-20 at Papecke Park (12:00 P.M.—6 P.M. on Sunday and Monday, and Tuesday 8:30 A.M.—11:00 A.M. near the start line). The festival will feature a beer garden, a family-friendly kids’ zone, live music, and food vendors. The festival is guaranteed to keep you and the family entertained throughout your time in Snowmass.
